How to Install and Configure an E-commerce Platform (e.g., WooCommerce)

WooCommerce is the most popular e-commerce plugin for WordPress.

 

Installation Steps (Pre-requisite: WordPress must be installed)

 

  1. Log in to WordPress Admin: Go to yourdomain.com/wp-admin/.

  2. Install WooCommerce: Navigate to Plugins Add New. Search for "WooCommerce." Click Install Now and then Activate.

  3. Run the Setup Wizard: Upon activation, WooCommerce will launch an Onboarding Wizard to guide you through initial setup.

 

Initial Configuration Checklist

Wizard Step Description Key Information Needed
Store Details Enter the physical address of your business for tax and shipping calculations. Country, State, City, Postcode.
Industry Select the industry your store operates in (e.g., Fashion, Electronics). Helps WooCommerce tailor features and suggestions.
Product Type Choose between Physical Products, Digital Downloads, or a mix. Determines which shipping/download options appear later.
Business Details Select how many products you plan to display and if you currently sell elsewhere. Helps set up pricing tiers and features.
Theme Selection Choose a theme compatible with WooCommerce (e.g., Storefront). A dedicated e-commerce theme is highly recommended.

After the wizard, continue configuration via WooCommerce Settings:

  • Payments: Set up payment gateways (e.g., Stripe, PayPal, WooPayments).

  • Shipping: Define shipping zones, rates, and methods for your products.

  • Taxes: Configure tax classes and rates for your region.
