Understanding the Difference: Domain Registration vs. Web Hosting

Print

Think of a website as a house:

Feature Domain Registration (Your Address) Web Hosting (Your House/Land)
Purpose Provides the unique address (e.g., example.com) that people type into a browser to find your site. Provides the server space and technology where your website's files, images, and code are stored.
Action You register it through a domain registrar, essentially leasing the name for a period (e.g., one year). You rent storage space and resources (CPU, RAM, bandwidth) from a hosting provider.
Can one exist without the other? Yes, you can register a domain without a website/hosting, but it won't point anywhere meaningful. Yes, hosting exists on a server, but without a domain name, visitors would need to use a complex IP address.
